Though nothing has really changed about the txt msg plan from ATT. When early adopters got the original phone, the text messaging was bundled but not included. You basically took your pre-iPhone plan and added $20, $30, of $40 to it based on how much text messages you wanted. Basically, there was still a $20 premium to get unlimited text messages.

1) they didn’t make a bigger model (32gb.. i know they can do it, look at ipod touch)
2) AT&T REMOVED text messaging from the plan structure, so the monthly cost goes up by much more than the advertised $10/month
3) AT&T’s coverage area *still sucks* which is why I didn’t buy the *first* iPhone

It just goes to show how you shouldn’t be one of those fools waiting in line all night to be first to obtain the newest offering from the iGods… you would have probably bought one if you could have, and now you’ve had that enforced time to consider you realise (hooray!) that there is no real point.
