Today was a pretty huge day for Mac Fanboys everywhere. Today marked the release of Apple’s new version of the Mac Operating System (OS 10.5 Leopard). Unfortunately for me, I am not able to enjoy the new operating system. Why is that? Well apparently, FedEx isn’t going to deliver any packages to my area because of the fires.

Now let’s completely throw out the inconvenience that this causes me and let us look at the logistics of the situation. FedEx claims that they are unable to deliver the packages because of the fires which have been completely contained in and around the area that I live and work. Ok, let’s just pretend for a moment that, though there are no fires here, the fires elsewhere can somehow stop the delivery. Then why on earth is it that UPS appeared to not have a single problem delivering package after package to my business suite (and all the suites in the area) without any trouble at all? Our UPS driver dropped off one set of packages in the morning and made two pickups later in the afternoon. Seems to me that other couriers don’t have a problem delivering packages. Oh, did I mention that my package was shipped Priority Overnight. I guess they just didn’t feel like making the delivery a priority.

I’m sure you’re thinking that I’m a little too upset over a late package, however you don’t understand the inconvenience this places on me. Leopard is a substantial upgrade to the Mac operating system with significant changes to the UI. While your average person might just think that the change is simply cosmetic, they wont understand how the new UI effects a power user who spends hours perfecting his own system of folder hierarchies, custom icons, and file management. A few months ago I installed a beta version of the OS on a clone of my system. All my customizations we instantly destroyed (as they were manufactured within the system provided by the old OS) and I was forced to redesign my system for the new OS. After probably five hours of tinkering, I was able to create a new system.

I’m perfectly happy with spending countless hours perfecting my custom systems, so long as I have countless hours to spend. If I would have received my package tonight, the weekend would have provided ample time for me do all the work I needed to before returning to work on monday. Unfortunately, I can’t do it this weekend because my package isn’t going to be delivered. Instead, when I eventually do receive the install discs, I’ll only have five hours after leaving work to do a complete cloned backup of my system drive, install the upgrade, and perfect my system before I have to head off to sleep for the next day.

This is unbelievably annoying and frankly just pisses me off. The worst part is the stupid email they sent me saying that I could pick up my package if I didn’t want to wait. The only problem is that they didn’t bother telling me where my package currently resides. The online status just says “Sand Diego, CA” (which if you don’t live here, doesn’t narrow it down much at all). I have a feeling I’m going to spend a lot of time tomorrow on phones and running around town.
